About the Course

The Timothy Course is a weekly, seminary-level training opportunity for both men and women. Second Timothy 2:2 is a charge directed toward preachers of the Bible to train up other preachers of the Bible. Paul tasks Timothy by saying, “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” This is the motivation and purpose for the Timothy Course.

What will you learn?

It is designed to equip people with tools for accurate Bible interpretation and faithful Bible proclamation. It is also designed to develop some of the philosophical and practical skills needed for the complexities of handling the Scriptures with the opportunity to demonstrate those skills you have acquired. The course content will examine various models of interpretation of the gospel, articulation of the gospel, and Christ-centred, expository preaching of the gospel. A significant amount of time and effort will focus on exploring the various genres of Scripture and the interpretative principles that accompany each of them. Students will also be exposed to various doctrines, Bible books, and more.

What are expositions/preaching workshops?

We believe that expositions/preaching workshops are an essential component of the course. Throughout the duration of the course, students will be assigned three different passages to teach. These passages will be assigned to each student at the beginning of the year.

Length: 5 minutes - 20 minutes respectively (depending on the type of exposition, see the syllabus for specifics)

Format: Live workshop settings with a time for feedback

Aim: To help students learn how to study the Bible for Bible teaching or personal devotion

These are not intended to be stressful, but to encourage one another through feedback to become better Bible expositors (person who explains ideas and passages from the Bible). You will be given the tools you need to prepare for your assigned passage beforehand. Our goal is to help you study the Word of God better, so you are welcome to use the commentaries that we have and talk with pastors for guidance.

Course Format

The course includes lecture formatting, course readings, and live preaching workshops with peer and instructor feedback. These lectures and live preaching workshops will be delivered in a live classroom setting. The classes will be held at the Metropolitan Bible Church from 9:15 AM to 12:00 PM. A remote option is available to students, and we will provide students with a Microsoft Teams link for students to join. A link will be provided to students prior to the start of the course.

The course looks to follow a similar format to the local academic year. The course will occur from October 30, 2023, to May 13, 2024.
